ZADCO overhauls Arzanah generators

Tuesday, Aug 31, 2010

Mott MacDonald has advised Zakum Development Co. (ZADCO) Abu Dhabi on diesel generator replacement at the Arzanah Island facility.

The center, part of ZADCO’s Satah oilfield development, 200 km (125 mi) offshore of Abu Dhabi, has water injection equipment and utility and accommodation loads, and requires around 3.5-4 MW of power.

As gas is not available on the island, power turbines operate on diesel. ZADCO had replaced some of the turbines with high speed diesel generators to limit fuel consumption, but the new machines had recurring problems and occasional major breakdowns.

ZADCO appointed Mott MacDonald as FEED consultant to assist with implementation of new diesel generators to improve performance of the power plant operation. This led to in-depth failure analysis to establish the root cause of the problems with the existing diesel generators, and the recommendation that medium-speed diesel generator sets could provide the necessary operational reliability.

Mott MacDonald says Phase I of the project likely will involve installation of two new diesel generators with 13.8 kV and 60 Hz terminal voltage inside a customized engine room. The company provided design, engineering, and cost services for the project, and health and safety and environmental impact assessments.

Capital outlay for both phases I and II of the project will be around $18 million.
